Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey
CNNS is India’s first-ever nationally representative nutrition survey conducted specifically for children and adolescents aged 0-19 years. The survey was conducted along with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with support from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). CNNS provides vital insights into nutritional status, dietary practices, and micronutrient deficiencies across age groups. Unique in its scope, the survey combines household interviews with biomarker assessments to offer a comprehensive picture of malnutrition, anaemia, and other health indicators. The findings from CNNS are instrumental in shaping targeted interventions and policies under national initiatives like POSHAN Abhiyaan, aiming to improve the nutritional outcomes of India’s young population and advance progress on health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
As the nodal agency we conducted the comprehensive national nutrition survey (CNNS) to estimate a nationally representative and comprehensive nutritional profiling of pre-schoolers (0 to 4 years), school-age children (5 to 14 years) and adolescents (15 to 19 years). We designed the methodology, developed data collection tool (CAPI) in CSPRO, analysed the data using statistical tools and developed State level factsheets and national factsheets.
It was a cross-sectional, household survey collecting a wide range of data from more than 120,000 children and adolescents in both urban and rural areas in all 30 states of India. The aim of the survey was to quantify in a robust manner the true nutrition burden at national and state levels among the three age groups, reorient policy according to the needs of nutrition transition and serve as a baseline to evaluate the progress of several nutrition initiatives launched by the government of India.
