Harmonizing Life: The Role of Biodiversity in Achieving Sustainable Living

The fabric of life on earth, Biodiversity, weaves together ecosystems, species, and habitats into a vibrant tapestry of existence. This precious web of life is not only under threat but there seems to be no slowing down. Globally, we have lost about 35% of mangrove forests in the last few decades due to urbanization, industrialization, and aquaculture. Further, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights the rising sea surface temperatures by approximately 1.0°C since the late 19th century. It predicts that there is a 50% chance of the global temperature rising to 1.5 degrees Celsius between 2021 and 2040.

The globe across is engulfed with climate change, deforestation, pollution, over exploitation, population growth, urbanization that are leading to ecosystem disruption. The climate crisis is a major driver of biodiversity loss worldwide. Increasing temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events are altering habitats and threatening species’ survival. These have severe negative impact on human health.

The extent and nature of damage to habitat and human health is difficult to be ascertained in the definitive however, the Community Development Model by Population Council helps in forecasting or predicting future outcomes of climate and environmental changes. This innovative model helps in understanding the relationships between population, urbanization, economic, climate, and environmental changes. The projections revolve around the vulnerability and resilience of different communities and their ability to adapt. For instance, the model can predict the biodiversity loss due to urbanization and population arrangement or the morbidity and mortality due to climate change.

Countries across the globe are committed to protecting the biodiversity. Around 196 countries are signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) which was first adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and came into force by the end of following year. The CBD aims to conserve biodiversity, promote sustainable use of its components, and ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources. Many national governments have taken big steps as part of their commitment. For example, Wildlife Corridors in India protects tiger habitats and ensures the survival of tigers and other species by reducing human-wildlife conflict and preserving large, contiguous habitats. Further, collaborations among multiple nations, such as creation of Coral Triangle Initiative is also evident. This collaborative effort among six countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste) focuses on conserving the Coral Triangle, the world’s epicenter of marine biodiversity, through marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, and community engagement.

Protecting biodiversity is a collective responsibility that involves actions from governments, communities and individuals. Each person can contribute in meaningful ways to support and preserve the rich tapestry of life on Earth. A small act of one has a ripple effect in creating a sustainable world, a world that we would like to leave behind for our future generations. A few action points include ‘learning about local biodiversity’, ‘making informed choices’, ‘considering reuse and recycle’, ‘collaborating and advocating for favourable policies and actions’. Together, we can turn the tide and protect our planet’s rich tapestry of life.

?️? Protecting and preserving biodiversity is not just about saving species but also about safeguarding human health and well-being. Biodiversity contributes to essential ecosystem services, supports disease regulation, ensures food security, enriches cultural and mental health, and sustains economic livelihoods. Ensuring the health of our planet’s ecosystems is integral to maintaining and improving our quality of life. Together, we can safeguard the incredible diversity of life on our planet and ensure a healthy future for generations to come.?✨
